WENT OUT TODAY IN THE YARD OF MY 1900S HOME AND THERE WERE SOME DARN ROCKS THAT I HAVE HIT EACH TIME I HAVE MOWED. WELL TOOK THE OLE TATOR FORK AND WENT TO PRYING THIS ROCK THAT AFTER OUT THE GROUND AND TOSSED WEIGHED I GUESS ABOUT 30 LBS AND WAS VERY BIG IN SIZE AND IN THE GROUND 2 FT OR LITTLE LESS I SAW SOMETHING SHINY AND MOVED THE DIRT AROUND AND LORD AND BEHOLD MY DRY SPELL HAD BEEN BROKEN. THERE STARRING BACK AT ME , 8 SHINY MARBLES THAT I BELEIVE ARE OLD AND THERE COLORS TO ME ARE AWESOME. NO DETECTOR NEEDED. FOR ITS ON HOLD UNTIL I FIND SOMEWHERE TO DETECT AND I HAVE BEEN DOWN IN THE DUMPS AND THIS PUT A GRIN ON MY FACE. THEY MAY NOT BE THE BEST OF FINDS OR CLAY, BUT THEY ARE MARBLES AND THATS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. I THINK ITS MY TURN FOR A LITTLE RHYME SINCE I DO THIS TO EVERY ONE ELSE - [OLD SUTPHIN GOT UP AND WENT OUT TODAY TO DIG A FEW ROCKS THAT HAVE BEEN IN THE WAY , TOOK A TATOR FORK TO PRY THEM UP AND AFTER THERE REMOVAL 8 MARBLES SHOWED UP. THEY MAY NOT BE CLAY BUT THEY SURE ARE GLASS AND NOW MY DRY SPELL HAS BEEN BROKEN AT LAST!!!!!.:tongue3::laughing7::hello2::hello:

I love finding marbles. Maybe because I lost all of mine years ago. Great find.

There was an old man named Sutphin
His dry spell of late had been horrible
So he went out in his yard
Where the ground was rock hard
And dug him a cache of old marbles!

Old marbles are awesome. I know I'm getting older when I get more exited when I find a marble than an arrowhead!!! Oh well. I really miss walking the railroad tracks with my grandfather in the 70's when you could find those old big clear ones :sadsmiley:!!!! Still have them though!!!!!!

You're welcome to DC anytime. I've got the clay marbles in my yard. Nice work!

Heck you're welcome to SC anytime too. I've got a yard full of rocks

Cool finds. Love to pull marbles when I'm detecting. When I used to shoot marbles, we played on both dirt and sidewalks.

HEY FELLAS I APPRECIATE THE REPLIES AND OFFERINGS BUT FOR TYLER ,NO THANKS ON THE ROCKS I HAVE A LOT IN MY YARD ALSO AND DC METAL I WORKED IN DC AS IN ARCHETECUTAL SHEETMETAL MECHANIC FOR 6 YEARS AND DONT MISS DC AT ALL, BY THE TIME I GOT TO WORK I WAS TIRED FROM FIGHTING THE TRAFFIC THAT I DIDNT FEEL LIKE WORKING. AND FOR THE REST I THANK YOU FOR YOUR HUMOR. LOCO I THINK I PLAYED MARBLES ONCE WHEN I WAS A KID AND THERE WAS ONE GUY WHO WOULD JUST TEAR US A NEW ARSE. THEN AGAIN I LOST MORE THAN I PLAYED WITH. WE WERE INTO MATCHBOX AND DIRT.

Marbles are cool. Nice finds

Marbles are fun to find It is funny how they sometimes turn up when you dig a hole that has metal and a marble is in there too.

Yep, Those are Maryland Marbles... Many lost here...Nice collection!

ok the clear glass with inner swirls are cats eyes (more modern) the non clear swirl types are older say 1940 ish ...clay marbles are of course very old (pre 1900 ...to civil war or older)

WHAT I CANNOT FIGURE OUT IS WHY THEY WERE UNDER NEATH THIS HEAVY ROCK, I HAVE ALSO FOUND THEM IN THE WALLS WHEN I RENOVATED THE HOUSE AND THEY ARE SCATTERED ALL AROUND THE PROPERTY. I GUESS SOMEONE DIDNT WANT TO PLAY MARBLES THAT DAY AND DECIDED TO PUSH THEM DOWN BESIDE THE ROCK AND WITH TIME THEY ALL SETTLED AND MADE THERE WAY UNDER TO THERE FINAL RESTING PLACE.

I too love finding old marbles, of course the only way to do this is to always detect with your eyes looking down! :laughing7:

Thanks for sharing sutphin,
Dave

There was an old fellow named Sutphin
Who's caps-lock must have been stuck-in
His sense of grammar was
so much like a hammer
that reading it kinda was suckin'

:laughing7:

Marbles are so cool to find. I find them here in there when I dig a target but, not like digging the old bottle dumps.

Here you thought moving that rock would be all work and no play.

Congrats on the marble cache!!

Nice marbles, I knew I lost mine somewhere. If you're ever in Jersey give me a holler. I bet you're a great fella to hunt along side and pretty funny to boot.

IM SERIOUS.COME UP SOMETIME IF YOURE SO INCLINED.

Steve

See that, you won't go detecting so the treasure (marbles) hunted you down! Nice incidental find!
Maybe someone won them from a game of marbles or from a sibling and didn't want to lose them so hid them.
Mankind has been hiding things in the ground using rock markers since the dawn of time, the oldest "bank" in the world.

Some kid probably thought it would be fun to hide his sister's marbles under that big rock - try to bribe her for some candy or
pennies or something - she didn't play so there they stayed .
