Couldn't that be a Native American trail marker tree?
 
Yes, I think it is. It is nice to see such stuff. But.... the tree appears to be less than 150 years old. Maybe MODERN indians using the "old" methods. TTC
 
People always assume that a bent tree is an Indian marker tree, but they are very common in the woods. When the trees are just saplings a branch or a small tree falls on it, bends it over and since trees naturally grow up, it will send out a shoot that grows straight up. I used to take photos of these trees which were only a few inches in dia. and way to young for Indian marker trees.
 
Looks like something from the lord of the rings.
 
digging-everything has the right idea...Not ALL trees that look like this were man made...Some are completely natural...
