For a quick lunchtime hunt, I hit my old standby farm down the road from work today.
Hot and humid, but at least overcast. My ol' Tesoro was really acting up, in a good way though. It was picking up items in places I've searched numerous times. Mainly a lot of junk rusty iron (nails & plow tips), but some keepers too.
My finds were:
*A large piece of a crock or jug. (In the same hole as a nail)

*A rusty buckle.

*A triangular shaped decorative buckle (?).
Any ideas on this one? There is a moveable pin on the back side.

*A very unique small silver spoon with what looks like a small lion head on the front, and a monkey head on the back. At least I think it's a lion and monkey. Some folks at work thought it was a devil, not a monkey. ;D
It is stamped "800" on the inside cupped portion of the spoon.
I'm pretty sure most of the handle is missing.
I thought it looked handmade, but the "800" stamp threw me off.
Some folks I showed it to said it may be a SNUFF or medicine spoon?
It looks to be handmade and very old to me.
Any ideas on this piece?

No silver coins, just a silver spoon.
Gypsy- This looks like a piece you would like. ;)

Have a great week. Ridley and I will be continuing our MDing adventures up in the NC mountains on Saturday. It's a long way to go for coins, but it's a lot cooler up there. ;)

The "800" mark was used during the mid 1800's by German and other European silversmiths. It looks like a tea caddy spoon.

The devil and lion motif are a mystery.

That's one "hell" of a fantastic spoon!

It definitely need more rasearch!

Congratulations!

Ridley

At first I thought it may have been Lindsay Lohan's coke spoon, but it isn't worn enough. :o :o

Looks like you have picked over that spot pretty good. Still nice to find a silver spoon. Was it deep? Usually those silver spoons ring out load and clear.

Bob,
You are correct. It was in the backyard of this farmhouse where I have searched so many times before. There were two differences this time though:
1) I am now using the DD coil, so I'm finding deeper targets.
2) The soil is now totally dry instead of soft like before.

One weird thing I've been experiencing the last two days at this farm, in the same spots I've hunted,is I am digging up soooo much rusted iron that I missed in the past. Large AND tiny pieces are now screaming out on my machine.
For example: a tiny pin sized piece about 8" deep. The other extremes though were hoe heads, and axe heads at only an inch or two deep! Now why would I have not found those earlier, especially that huge? Weird. I've had my machine set to discrim. out anything pull tabs and below, so I could concentrate on mostly coins instead.
The coins have been getting harder and harder to find, because I'm stuck to just hitting the lawn grass areas over and over until I can go back out into the woods this fall. I've only hunted on a few acres of this 194 acre place, so I hope there will be more coins out in the woods for me. ;D
Have a great weekend.

"A triangular shaped decorative buckle (?)."
This is what is called a Sash Pin. From the late 1800's-early 1900's. The pin mechanism on the back and the clasp have been broken off, but that is what this originally was....a sash pin.

Nice spoon MM! I would guess it is a child's spoon so a monkey and lion would make more sense to me than a devil. ;)

Keep digging!

Gemee,
Thanks so much for that info. I didn't know what else to call it but a "triangular buckle". ;D
A Sash Pin sounds good to me. The age even sounds better. AWESOME!
Thank you,
MM

Papa,
I hope not! I saw 85 degrees for tomorrow up around Jefferson. I'm trying to get away from 100 degrees here. ;D
