Made in USA cap

Found this odd cap yesterday here in middle Massachusetts at mid 1800s cellar hole,not sure how long site was inhabited though.Says MADE IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,hole in middle and male threaded on opposite side,any thoughts on what it went to?

Quite possibly,I do have old one that has male threads,but what would purpose for hole be..cap on my lantern not vented,maybe this needed to be.

Possibly a "user upgrade" to attached a keeper line or chain . . . that didn't work. ;-)

Awsome,got a Juno lamp but all chrome,different cap,and believe Charlie P. got it right about it being repurposed.Thanks!
