Marc, It sure would be nice if the IP's of the person posting were on each post, it would tell you when one person is posting under different names, and also let you know when a person banned or shady seller returns under a different name and an IP one octive off.....

I agree, and boy would some people be SURPRISED how many "troll accounts" there were..

And in a lot of otHER cases, you wouldn't be surprised at all, I think.

Unfortunately, a lot of "bad things" can be done if you have someone else's IP, so I don't see that happening...

You can trace an ip to the local area, but your not going to get their address.....A great many of the websites post the IP for the user posting...

I have been admin on aproxmately 18 First Person gaming servers over the last 10 years, dealt with a lot of players using their ips who were cheating....

It's not really a question of their address, but you can do OTHER things, usually spam related with an IP, unless you can cut out the MAC part of it.

personally, I'm all for it, but there would be a LOT of people who would be PO'd if their "trolling days" were over.
I'd LOVE to see it, and those who do it, banned permanently.
You know who you are.
This place would probably lose 10% of the 'registered accounts', though and that is bad for revenue.
So I don;t see it happening pending any sale.

I don't think you will find that many paying charter members with dual accounts, but I am sure there are some who are using accounts under different names, usually to support their posts.......

As far as spam, a good virus program, spyware, firewall, and dilligence takes care of most of that....

I'm not naming names, but I had the ability to see this at 'another site', and I was AMAZED at how many "respected members" did that very thing.
It was CREEPY when you would see that they had been chatting with themselves for pages, and sometimes ARGUING..

Spent an awful lot of time chasing cheaters via ip, alias, guid etc. Run one server at the moment (BFBC2), hate the ported console crap.

Global Moderators(usually) and Admins(definitely) are usually the only ones who get to see the IPs. I don't believe the general forum has any need of such a thing, honestly. It is completely no ones business other than the poster and the management.
At least thats how it works on 100% of the rest of the forums I post on/Admin/own...

It could read out in the "fine print" that no one ever reads that your IP would only be seen by the webmaster / moderators for security reasons. The general public would not have be able to view the IP. Jeff is right, I don't want anyone that I dont know or might not trust to see my IP.

Also nobody is anonymous on the internet....No matter how hard you try to hide it. Ask Cybercop about the thing/s he dredged up about the infamous beerock....

IPs are posted on Treasure Depot, Finds Forum posts the first 3 octets which gives you the host, most times that gives you the ability to tell what city an IP is from, but not where in a city. You can also trace someone by the IPs in the header of an email you receive, as well as the address itself .....

Sorry AP, that was someone else you spanked, I never played MOH, I played and was admin for about 12 servers for Soldier of Fortune as well as played and admin for several for (SOF) Call Of Duty (COD), CODII, COD IV, and COD V WAW......

I had an expecially bad cheater who kept gettin into several of our SOF servers I was admin on, he was using wall hacks, aim bots, and a speed cheat....He would brag I could not ban him..... he was wrong. I traced his IPs found out he was out of Malaysia, I then banned the entire country of Malaysia.....
