A group of people ended up going to a site in Arkansas with some Civil War history behind it and had the potential to be very productive. But no one had any luck so we decided to move on to another site that had been productive to us before. I only found a modern nickel and that was lying on the ground. Needless to say, I was disappointed and welcomed the news of trying some place different.
I was hunting in a large plowed field with a group of other people, and that area had been hunted pretty thorough in the past by our club members. With the exception of digging some iron targets here and there, I wasn’t getting any good signals. After about 45 minutes I finally ended up getting a good signal at about 3 inches and I was thinking that I had a silver quarter. I flipped the plug up and saw a 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. That was a first for me and I was excited. At least I wasn’t going home skunked. I continued hunting hoping to find more and I would inspect it more closely when I took a break.
As time went on I ended up finding a 1910 $2 ½ Dollar Indian Head Gold Coin. All of a sudden the half dollar took a back seat to my newest find.
I did notice that there were some scratches on the half dollar, but the site was a plowed field and I was thinking that farm equipment had made them over the years… With all of the excitement of the gold coin, I didn’t really look the half dollar over closely until late that evening. Once I inspected it closer though, I noticed that there were some letters carved in the coin on both sides.
I ended up with two “firsts” for me on that day and it is a day that I will never forget. The gold coin is great and is something that I and all treasure hunters hope to find one day. The half dollar is just as special to me though, and with the coin being personalized with someone’s name, makes it even more of a special find to me.
Looks to me like it could be the name, WILL and the initial M on the front. And WILL with a line underneath it on the reverse. (Let me know if you see anything different or have other ideas)
