Hey everyone,

Today I stopped at one of the newer (less than 5 years at that location) banks and picked up $50 in rolled halves. The teller was happy to get rid of them, but before she handed them over she spent a few minutes looking for a black sharpie, then drew a single line down the length of each roll.

That said, I still got skunked. One of the rolls was filled with '74s, and someone had defaced each coin by writing "37" on the obverse with a black sharpie.

Regular store bought wrapper to get rid of spare change. I think the teller marked them to see if she'd get them back.

Was there an account number or something else written on them? If so, she might have just been crossing them out. If not, who knows? ???

She was marking through the account number, to not give out private information.

It looks like the accout number started with the numbers 18. At least from what I can see in that picture.

People used to be required to put their account numbers on their rolls. Now they are not. But, some older people still remember the old rules, and do it anyway. I LIKE when I see account numbers, or marks where they were marked out. It means older people, which means "maybe" some older coins. :-0

That's what she did there though.

If you wanted to, you could work on the INSIDE of the roll and look at the depressions and figure out the account number. You can even shade it on an angle with a pencil and hte account number would come through (But not the marker). Due to the paper being creased by the pen when it was written on there. I little technique I used a few times when I worked a LONG time ago in a crime lab (Well before it was changed to "CSI") Not that you care what the account number way... but you could.

The 37 probably represents the month and year that particular coin was checked.......March 07.

Yep-

and since they were 74's, they had been set aside and probably inspected for DDO.
You're in Houston and will find more marked halves than unmarked halves most of the time - I do.... :-\
