I guess since the credit card era 70's ...80s and beyond nobody was considered a miser:laughing7: . Is the label a kind of slander to sauce up a mundane death in a local newspaper? Is the label to suggest hidden wealth?
He was a prominent farmer sent to an asylum at age 45...
One things for sure, journalism quality hasnt changed much between centuries:laughing7:

While indeed the quality of reporting was ordinary. But its some times all too easy to write things off without bothering to check either.

Stories like these can some times bare fruit. And besides if anything they are excellent exercise to sharpen research skills.

In about an hour and a half. I found his obituary. Two of his descendants. Some still living in the area. His death record. His head stone. marriage records Census records. The properties he owned and most of all read his will leaving his house property and farm to his wife. And all livestock. He had a 120 acre farm. He as paper claimed spent time in a institution but that does not mean he was homeless or poor?

Did he have money well that is mere speculation of course?

But he would of just went through The Panic of 1896 was an acute economic depression in the United States that was less serious than other panics of the era, precipitated by a drop in silver reserves, and market concerns on the effects it would have on the gold standard. Many rural areas went through bank closures. So its not beyond the realms of possibility he might of horded money not trusting banks?

When he died suddenly he may been hoarding?

Did the reporter know the person and wrote that he was cheap? Could suggest he saved money and did not like to spend? Since his will mentioned no money?

It might not beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere on the farm he lived on before he died suddenly there is a small cache hidden somewhere?

Of course this may or may not be truth however the fact is stories like these can some times bear fruit.

For me amigo its totally amazing how far we can get with searching information. For example this David Bowersmith who died 120 year ago. Even tracked down his address below, the old farmhouse is now only 20 acres. A ghost of itself but still there. Many of the farm out buildings have gone.

The point of this exercise it shows how much can be discovered about an ordinary person who lived and died 120 years ago with a little research. Amazing when think I have done this from the other side of the world. That is why amigos the most powerful treasure hunting tool available is the computer screen you are looking into..

Gidday Jeff please do keep posting these stories big or small as they are mind candy for those who like to research.

Regardless if they are real or not or even viable if they are real? There is an old military saying "Time spent in research is never wasted."

Each story researched strengthens ones research skills. These skills becomes like gold amigos opening, opportunities in places beyond imagination.
