Hey all, I was hoping to get some assistance with some symbols that appear on a colonial era masonic cuff link I found the other day. I was able to find several that were posted on T-net over the past several years, however mine has 2 additional symbols on it not on the others.
In mine and the others you have the free mason square and compass. Above it you have the moon and the sun. Below you have the spade/trowel and the triangle/pyramid.
In the middle of the square and compass is a symbol that shows up on the others I found on t-net. Instead of the current "G" it has what appears to be the head to a hammer. Can anyone confirm that it is a hammer? If not what is it?
Now there are two symbols on mine that I cannot find anywhere else. At the very bottom of the cufflink is what appears to be an open book. I believe this to represent the bible, maybe Psalm CXXXIII? Does anyone know if it signifies something specific to the bearer of the cufflinks.
Up on top, is a 6 pointed star/asterisk. It does not appear to be the Easter Star, nor is it the jewish/2 triangle 6 pointed star I see referenced in a lot of Masonic imagery. I was able to find identical stars on one image I found in google images from a book that dates to 1776. Does anyone have an idea as to the meaning of it?
I've attached pictures of my cuff link and the image I found.
Thanks all for your assistance.
