Hi-
What a great site for the appreciation of historical artifacts! Because of this website, I have a pretty good idea of the sword I have, but wanted to just get a double check.

I think I have a Masonic Knight Templar Sword manufactured by MC Lilley. The pommel depicts a knights head with a black grip. The blade has crusader scenes engraved into with along with the name "James M Scott". Not sure what the sheath is made out of, but it does include some scenes on it as well.

Will anyone be able to take a look at the pictures to confirm if this in fact a Masonic Knight Templar Sword? Also, I would like to know what the best way to clean this is.

Thanks!

I have never seen a black handle before, but it looks to be Masonic. Any history on it?

I believe the way it's marked indicates a date of 1865-1882

Your sword would date between 1865 to 1882 The name of the company changed from M.C Lilley & Co. to The M.C. Lilley & Co. Yours is a pretty nice looking sword, but unfortunately they don't bring very high values, if you check completed listings on ebay you'll see them selling in the lower part of between 100 - 200$ mostly. I think they're cool swords, and I'd be happy to hang it on my wall

the Knight of Columbus (catholic) also uses a similar design of sword -- its the "door guard's sword" ...

its a officers sword (Masonic / Knights of Columbus) --- the tylers ( outer door guard ) sword * -- it is mainly symbolic * these days -- tylers are to guard the meeting chamber door and only allow "qualified members" to enter the meeting chambers and to prevent eves droppers from listening in at the door ....
