who knows, i think the treasure is probably still out here in west Texas. I haven't read a lot on the subject but i grew up in this area, south of where some say it is hidden. Del Rio, TX. I've explored the area along the Pecos, Devils, and Rio grande rivers since i was a child and believe me, if there ever was a place to hide treasure this would be the area to hide it in. There are so many ravines, canyons, draws, with caves, fissures, etc. that it would take a lifetime to thoroghly explore a fraction of them. Not to mention the hostility of the emvironment here, the heat, very little water, very rough terrain, it is a beautiful place but very inhospitable. You can easily bel injured, get lost or die out here. I would have to say that i believe there are probably several caches or "treasures" hidden in the vast hills, canyons and desert in southwest Texas. I've heard stories of cavalry payloads hidden in flour barrels being stolen, hidden, and never recovered. I also heard a story about maximilian's gold being hidden somewhere along the Pecos river canyons only 60 miles from here. I believe a popular site where some believe it is hidden is called castle gap near Crane, TX. I personally think it is too wide open in that area. The pecos and Devils River canyons seem to be a much better place. Wish i had more time to research.
