I was out scouting a location and doing some hiking recently. I had been reading alot of info here on signs, carvings, and symbols. It really made me look for more than what was really there. I came around a knoll and saw this bent tree. I stood there for a minute looking at it and figured it was natural. The more I looked at it, the more odd it appeared. I never would have noticed it without the help of everyone here. However, out of curiosity I moved in the direction the tree was pointing. It pointed directly to the river, and just before the bank sat this HUGE hollow tree that would take three or four people holding hands to go around it. I didn't have my metal detector with me at the time, but I did have my gps and I marked the coordinates to both trees. This is supposedly KGC country, or Jesse James country, as the Meramec Caverns is located not far from here, and that is marketed as Jesse's hideout. Am I just reading too much into this? Look at the pics and tell me what you think.

Texas may be correct, but if the tree was topped at one time the center would easily rot out this way.
That would leave the outside standing and still growing.
Anything that was attached to the part that died would rot away leaving this cool shell of a tree you show here.

Honestly ... I can't say whether it is anything in the line of a sign until I see more of the surrounding trees and rocks.

Most likely nothing but I must tell you this , as it is pertinent..
I have an old heritage oak of about 400 years plus, the base
of the tree is about 6-8' around, it has an opening like yours.

It is big enough to crawl inside and stand up, and on mine when
you do that there is a peep hole at eye level that focuses your site
at a very small spot in the meadow.

I don't think yours is one of these , cause I don't see any peep hole
thing going on , but just so you know to check out all possibilities
You might even take a compass reading on the opening, does it
face north?
Thom is correct more pics of any surrounding rocks
will help to tell if this was part of the trail marking system

..always pay close attention you never know!
