I found this with my Tesoro metal detector in northern AZ a few years ago. Based on what I've read, It has the characteristics of a meterorite, but I'm still not convinced. Any thoughts out there on what it is or may be?
Thank you! 20180222_105900.webp20180222_105924.webp20180222_110333.webp20180222_110340.webp20180222_110349.webp20180222_110405.webp

Cool find! I don't think it is a meteorite, BUT, I would call the geology department over at NAU

ask-its@nau.edu and see if they would take a look at it. :occasion14:

It's one of the best "maybes" I ever seen posted here...

Interesting find. From what little I know, you have some maybe AND maybe not features. Grind off a corner and see what's inside. Good luck.

Does it attract a magnet?

I am not and expert but it really looks possible to me. Have it looked at by a pro

Yes, it is very magnetic and quite heavy compared to a rock of similar size.
Thanks for your interest.

The problem with a magnet test is that many terrestrial rocks are also attracted to a magnet. While your rock looks promising, only a qualified professional will be able to give you an answer based on more than appearance.

Past time for more coffee.

A definite maybe. Nice find:thumb_up:

Very possible. John Attard in San Diego can test a small piece for nickel if you really want to know. Check out his website. I have used him before. Takes about two weeks.

I'm with TS, it lacks a couple of visual characteristics of meteorites.

The pictures appear to show, along with magnetism property, that you found a specimen of magnetite.

It has a metallic appearance, is magnetic, and has an irregular fracture-breakage character (no clear cleavage).

Identification can be further tested by its physical properties: Mohs hardness and streak tests (powder color on porcelain).

See if you can scratch glass. Meteorites typically don't, nor other forms of iron minerals.

The streak should be black (not brown or reddish) and slightly magnetic powder particles.

As Terry Soloman suggested, I'll see if someone at NAU can check this out for me... Thanks to all of you folks for your terrific input.
Happy hunting!
