Some recent posts have inspired me to keep an eye out and get better at spotting artifacts that are not points and scrapers. I was walking my dog recently and noticed a somewhat out of place gathering of cobbles at the edge of my neighbors creek. I took my dog home and came back to check it out. One of the stones was this:
It appears the sides have been smoothed and one end was used to beat on stuff? These types of artifacts are all new to me so I’m not sure if I’m even looking for the right stuff. I did get up into the field next to it and found a few flakes and chunks of fired rock, and I know already my area had a somewhat significant native population at one point. Talked to my neighbor and he says he’s never found any points but he’s also not looking. Told me I’m welcome to walk the field whenever, so I’m pretty excited for the possibilities in that area! Let me know what you guys think on this one. Thanks!
On a side note, I know the red rocks are that color because they were in a fire. I always find them busted so I was wondering if they would’ve been treating the material, or just using them in a fire ring and they bust? Maybe both? Do any of you guys keep them? I just like the red color.
