I might be going to Costa Mesa, CA for Oracle training at the end of June. I'd like to do some beach hunting in the evenings, after class. Are there any places that are off-limits? Where would be the best places to check out? I won't be going in the water, I'll just be bringing my Explorer and sunscreen!

Thanks,
Scott

That is how all of you get arrested! Don't forget the suit.

I'm not sure what you mean, Sandman, about getting arrested. Do they not allow detecting on the beaches there? If not, I can go north like I did two years ago when I was at class in El Segundo.
As far as bringing the water machine, I have one, but it's a pain to bring the scoop on the plane. The one time I did, they lost it for two weeks.
I just want to get out and do some detecting in the evenings when I'm there instead of sitting in the hotel room and watching TV.

Ok, Sandman, I figured out what you were saying. Cute. I had to re-read my post a couple of times. Of course I'll be wearing more than just sunscreen! I burn way too easily.
As far as there not being much "dirt", does that mean that there isn't a sandy beach area to detect? As much as I'd like to hunt in the water, I don't really want to bring all that equipment (the long handled scoop) with me. I can take my Minelab and digger on the plane as a carry-on, so it won't get lost or broken. The last time, I was amazed at how many people in the airport knew exactly what it was. I opened the bag before putting it on the belt so they could look at it and there was no problem at all.

Make sure its a genuine Idaho potato..........
I lived just north of Costa Mesa in Long Beach fer many years, unfortunately never owned a detector til I moved to Idaho. In hind site I would have hit Bolsa Chica (just north of Huntington Beach), a lot of tourist around the RV camp sites = lots of jewelry & clad.

One of my co-workers suggested that I go South to Laguna Beach. What does everyone think of that? Is there any problem going down there?

You can't go wrong visiting Laguna Beach at any time. It's known for its artists...a very creative community....somewhat like Carmel-By-The-Sea in character.

You might PM Paul-Is-Dead...he lives in Laguna Beach and can give you the facts.

If you have the time, try attending the Pageant of the Masters. The Sawdust Festival is also worth a side venture. Both events are open at the same time and are located maybe a half mile inland from the beach.
