Actually, looks like East German:
Pieces of the Past: Cold War Relics

Click on the image lower left, "East German Hat Bridge". That will enlarge the pic. Found another result in a search but was no longer on eBay.

Here's another, on eBay/UK:
GENUINE NVA DDR EAST GERMAN ARMY OFFICERS CAP BADGE | eBay

I think you are right on KCM....ours doesn't connect to the main body of the badge at the bottom. Thanks to both of you fellars!! Now, if my wife can remember where she found it!!

Wow!! Thanks dig!! I told the wife that I thought that was a surveyor's transit or maybe a compass. Which is it?? Thanks again!!
It's a hammer and a compass. It was the national emblem for the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) formerly known as East Germany and was also on the flag. I wouldn't steer ya wrong.

LOL, Some things I know automatically, this was one I knew because I collect militaria. Other things I've seen on here before or have run across it researching something else in the past. Then there are many that just need a few clicks of the mouse to figure out. I collect/ buy, sell and trade antiques and collectibles as a hobby so you learn many things by way of researching your own found items. It keeps me out of trouble and it beats drinking.

I seem to have forgotten so very much that I used to know, so most things I have to look up. ...Make me wonder if the big "A" is in my future! :-\ (Alzheimer's)
