A friend found this pendant. It is about one inch long and has a large what looks like an amythst heart shaped stone inside. It is very heavy for the size. It appears as when they put the stone inside they then clamped the wings shut as it is not hinged. No pic of the back but it has "MOM" etched on it. We are trying to find the maker, what metal it is, etc…. any help would be awesome. Thank you.

I bought and sold jewelry for over 20 years... It is a base metal of some sort. If is was silver or gold most all jewelers marked it so you knew what it was made of. The stone is pretty but a synthetic. If it was a true Ruby etc... they would never cover it up... Great find though and beautiful!

I agree with MasterJedi, and will add: Judging by the shape, your pendant looks to be Art Deco, and the black or dark color denotes 'mourning jewelry.' The height of mourning one's death was during the Victorian period and tapered off during the turn of the century up to the Art Deco period. Death was never so celebrated as during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Since it is inscribed with the word 'Mom,' we can assume it was made and worn as a memorial to the person's mother.

Neat find :)
