metal detecting equipment

I am new to this forum and haven't figured out how to search. I apologize if this has been covered already. My company has a couple of cable/pipeline locators AMPROBE AT-3500. I was wondering if anyone has experience in trying this with any success in lieu of a typical "treasure finding" metal detector to hunt for coins and small metal objects. Thanks.

Cable -pipeline locators use a signal generator that is applied to the target object. The receiver locates said signal. To apply a signal to a coin would require that the coin be exposed first. Thus already found. I have located cables and pipelines for a living for many years as a profession.

I manage 3 States in "Miss Utility" for our nationwide country. In none of them do we use anything other than a generated signal on the target utility. Google the mentioned machine in the OP. It has a separate signal generator box. It will not locate coins. Perhaps you know of some other technology that we don't have. We are only in 22 States thus far contracted to do " Miss Utility locates.

I watched the local,Miss Utility guy, on a lot here in Maryland. He was using a unit I have seen on accuratelocators.com It was the one sensor unit that hangs straight down on a shaft. A lower priced unit, version of there Runabout multi-sensor unit. All these units are hard to keep up with. Frank...

Maryland is a State with several Locating companies doing "Miss utility" locates. We are one of them. And I manage our company there. While there are several "brands" of equipment, none demonstrated to us has not had a signal generator with it. Signal generation is by far the most accurate and acceptable way to locate pipes, cables, etc. Most of these locators can be run in 60 cycle, "power mode' but it is very inaccurate. I would be interested in knowing about this equipment you mention. If you could, get it's name and model # and PM me. Thanks.

Here is the operating manual for the AT-3500 we have. On page 7 there is a section for inductive mode for locating unknown cables. This is what I was speaking of in my original post. I am unfamiliar with this technology, but was curious to know if inductive identification is for locating electrical current flow, or for detection of something that conducts electricity, as in a coin, etc. Thank you for your responses in advance.

Inductive mode, or 60cycle, or power mode is used on cables. It detects current FLOW. The signal is induced on the target cable by the batteries in the equipment. Coins would not carry a current. Great questions.
