I boarded a Norwegian Cruise out of Miami on May 4 and for the first time ever NCL took my detector from me when checking in for the cruise. They said detectors are prohibited on NCL cruise ships for safety reasons. Once on the ship I was able to convince security to allow me to get the detector back when departing the ship in St. Thomas and Great Stirrup Cay after I promised to return it once I got back on the ship.

This worked well in St. Thomas and I returned the detector once back on the ship.

I had no problem getting the detector back at GSC and took the tender to the island. As I was setting up my Excalibur I was approached by a lifeguard and subsequently the security manager, when I asked for clarification, that metal detecting is not allowed on the island. I was told detecting has never been allowed on GSC and they must not have seen me if I detected before.

I will be contacting NCL when I get home to voice my displeasure with this change but wanted to let the metal detecting community know so you don’t face the frustration I am facing on this cruise. Maybe if enough people contact them to complain they will reverse this decision. I am Platinum on NCL and have never had this happen before. I also cruise with Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity and have never had this happen on any of those cruise lines. Hopefully not a sign of things to come with the others!

Prohibited until they can figure out how to make money from it I'll bet. Remember, the cruise is not for your pleasure, but for their profit.
