Paul was one of God’s rejects. A smoker most of his life, he also enjoyed a wee dram. His Tolland-Man skin was the colour of peat and his nose resembled a moose’s knucklebone. But he was an excellent metal detectorist!

John Winter, if you continue to post threads that make me think, I'll stop reading 'em.
What materials I have I deem "unpublishable". And I'd never be brave enough to attempt publication.
But, I too agree a first paragraph must grab attention. Especially in short stories.
The word I now present, exclamation point included, has and will force me to read beyond a metal detecting tales first paragraph;

I LIKE THIS SUBMISSION:

Sex after today’s detecting session was better than finding the lost Roman legion’s final resting place. She turned to me, hair drenched, puckered lips a voluptuous rosy red and lovingly whispered … ‘more, more’

I kissed her passionately but had to (reluctantly) confess. ‘I can’t my darling; I forgot to charge the batteries …’

Yes that is a real attention getter but usually is reserved for when ratings start to fall. It follows a predictable pattern on sit-coms. Right at the end you will have people rising from the dead, then the final episode will have aliens.
