OK, let's say you could detect anywhere in the world ONE time, and ONE time only, whether it is protected property, religious, or otherwise sacred land or private property.

WHERE WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY

I've always thought it would be interesting to detect the Alamo in San Antonio Texas. Because of it's rich history in the settling of Texas. Or maybe to be able to detect Little Bighorn... Yep, one of these two sites would be great!!

So how about you folks?

Of course, you'd only do that as part of qualified archaological investigation!

I had an interesting experience once -

TreasureNet was listed under metal detecting in the Bellevue WA yellow pages -

I got a call from a guy who lost his gold wedding band at the volleyball court at the main Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA. I went there, found the ring, and realized I was detecting just outside Bill Gate's office window - & I found it! It might not be the Alamo, but it's equally iconic!

The most recent metal detecting I am aware of that happened at the Alamo was in 1993 when Frank Buschbacher convinced the San Antonio City council to allow him to use ground penetrating radar in front of the Alamo - the team used an unshielded antenna (which means it also has a field above ground) and they misinterpreted the street light above for Bowie's lost treasure below. I've often wondered what happened to Mr. Buschbacher. Does anyone know?

Wow, if I could detect ANYWHERE without consequence, I'd choose one of the U.S. mints! I'd have to think about which one, though. Or maybe Capitol Hill in D.C. Tough choice!

The old Silk Road, start to finish. If not that, any still intact and undisturbed 50 mile stretch of Roman era road. Oh yeah, the Valley of the Kings for dessert, or is it desert?

Strangely enough, more and more archaeological teams are resorting to md'ing to give them the quicker id on potential sites all over the world. Things move around in a circle. The lowly metal detector, once thought to be the companion only to the lowly TH'er...

Hey Marc...

Thanks for the info on the Alamo and Buschbacher... I never knew anyone ahd ever had the opportunity to detect there GPR or otherwise.

What I mean in my post is hypothetically speaking of course... I would never detect there with or without any archaelogical backing...

Just wondering what other really neat places might be out there that people may pass by or know of and think to themselves.... "Wow, I sure would like to detect there..." Of course in the above fantasy there would be no legal repercussions or any law breaking going on... It's only detecting in ones mind...

Pretty cool about MS too.... The guy that ya found the ring for was probably one of the original founders that started MS in the garage with Bill.... LMAO

I don't know if it is illegal or not, but I would love to detect The Mall in DC. It was full of troops throughout the civil war, and obviously has seen extensive use since.

As far as international sites go, The Tower of London would be neat. Pretty much any castle would be great as well, especially any of those which have been continuously occupied since the 1100's or so, like Burg Eltz in Germany.

Churches scattered all across the U.S.,,,,well,,,,ok ,,,Michigan for me. They are some of the oldest, undetected and undisturbed lands around.I know of one that I see every day I would love to spend an hour or two on.

I have been at this detecting 2 years,still a greenhorn,but since I started I have noticed many old (1800's) churches.Some in small towns out in the middle of nowhere.I have also noticed that most don't look like they have had any major landscaping done.I'll bet they are full of the goodstuff.

That Historical Marker out front keeps me away.

Hey Gold digger, I would have to say ALL of the Spanish Missions here in SA including the Alamo. You need to do what I do though, hunt around them. I have gotten permission to hunt adjoining properties to historical sites here. You can make some good finds that way.

Oh, did he say anywhere 'in the WORLD'?! I'd go for Norway. Detecting is illegal there, but if this is just a pipe dream it won't matter. Imagine all the Viking hoards from pillaging throughout the Old World. Back before the banking institution...

Any ancient site would do, though. Athens, Rome, Cairo, any city named 'Alexandria', for instance.

Any significant site in China would be good pickings. Not alot of tech there and the Chinese respect the dead. I'm talking about the old tomb areas and the silk road as well as the great wall areas.

Yeah GD you probably should have given the fantasy hunt a temporal variable too. Give me a CZ-5, 10 sets of batteries and a month or two along the Florida coast in 1716, or almost any large American city park around 1960. Prior to the widespread use of pulltabs and the sport of beavertail bending...

In that case, I'd have to change my answers too... I think I'd have been the first to discover gold in California and Alaska. The I'd have run down to the coast and dug up a few pirate treasures, from there I think I might go to the Egyptian Pyramids and found King Tut's tomb...

I reckon after all that I'd be tired and ready for an easy life in retirement...

Actually, the Custer Battlefield has been detected. They were able to track Custer's movements and engagements with what they found.

Indians had different weapons- actually a lot of Henry repeating rifles- compared to single shot Springfield rifles for Custer' soldiers-great advantage at close range. So areas with a lot of Henry casings and round musket ball dropping were Indian sites while areas with Springfield casings were sites where the soldiers fought.

A number of years ago volunteers with detectors worked with archeologists on the site. I believe when they found something- a small flag was placed at the location and then a archeologist would come a long and dig it up insitu. Sure wished I was one of the volunteers.
