What detector do you have? Main thing is using your detector a lot and learn what it is telling you. Hunt anywhere people congregate. Parks, ball fields, schools and beaches are usually good as well. :hello:

I have a bounty hunter been to alot of places like that but mostly find trash but I hear that's normal just waiting on my first real find to hook me.

Which BH detector you got? The 505 is nice! I got a pilot for my son who's 10, and finds Dimes like crazy with that thing! Anyway if you have an MD that has the pinpoint feature practice at it. And try to listen/ watch what your MD is telling you before you dig. You can get a little better at guessing what you'll find in the hole that way.

Make sure you read the manual too, sounds nerdy, but it might really help!

All great info here & they r telling the right things to start with the more u learn ur machine the more finds ull get,the better the finds will b. Try the detector brands section read threw it its a dedicated section for the people using bh machines. Since u said also that ur new to the hobby if u don't already have look into a decent digger something that'll cut nice plugs ( ur gonna want to practice digging plugs so u don't kill areas of grass that u been to),also gonna want a treasure pouch to one that has at least 2 pockets 1 for the good finds 1 for trash ( be sure to take trash u dig with u not only will it help u in the future returning to the place for future scans of the area, the grounds people will know ur not a hack) fill in ur holes, last that's pretty important a hand held pinpointer obviously u can detect without, but it will cut ur time down in each plug find by more then half,& it'll help with not damaging that rare coin,or rare peice of jewlery, the last & probly the most important thing have fun

i only wish i found this sight when i first started they give great advice here. i agree 100 percent with what everyone has told you good luck and good digging.

Try this site for comparing old aerial pics with modern satellite images. Great way to look for houses/buildings that are no longer there.

NETR Online • Historic Aerials

Historic aerials is an awesome site thanks greatly for the info.

Agreed arials is good I use historic map works & overlay old on top of current works very well & lots of cities & towns

How do you overlay old / new maps?

Historic map works.... use that to find very old sites.. has a free overlay to modern day on some of the maps

Alright, I've only ever used it from my phone, I'll have to go on my PC and try it.

On Historic Aerials, you can compare sites by choosing the "Compare - Slide" option at the top. You can also choose to overay all roads. It's pretty slow to load, so don't think it would work well on a phone.

They are decent machines to start with, despite what most here think. It's better than all the cheap Chinese copy cat detectors for sure!

Swing it for a bit and get some practice in, and when your ready upgrade to something a bit nicer. Hit up some places that you know people have gathered in large groups- parks, beaches, fair grounds, school yards etc...... And don't dig anywhere foolish- like around monuments and state parks etc. have fun and welcome to the hobby- best of luck to you sir!

The Bounty Hunter will be a great detector to start with, but I'm sure you'll want to upgrade if you plan on continuing in the hobby.
