Metal Detector Rentals

Most dealers have one they keep around for renting out. Look up "metal detecting equipment" in the yellow pages, for dealer listings. I know the dealer in my town, for instance, keeps an old 6000d for a rental unit. $15 p/day is what he charges, as an example.

Then I have a problem. There are no MD dealers near me except 1 that sells White's, but I am looking at another brand. I have searched yellow pages, called several hobby shops, nothng.

Why not rent a Whites then? Sure there are "Chevy vs Ford" debates as to the various merits, but what the heck are you trying to do, that a simple machine can't handle? My hunch is, that the average person who doesn't own a machine (and thus, isn't "into this" "experienced", etc....) would probably not gain much by a super dooper machine, verses a simple machine, for a one-day rental anyhow. I mean, if you've never had experience detecting in the first place, I think maybe a "turn and go" detector is what you want/need anyhow?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

First of all, I do own a MD. My son wants to get into MDing and the one I have he can't figure it out. I want to buy him an ACE 250, but would like to do a try before I buy type thing. This way we could go to a park or somewhere and he would be able to use it and I would know if it is the right MD for him.

Oh...as far as not being "into this", I spent over 3 hours today doing research online on different local old sites for me and another fellow MDer to possibly go MD. I am going tomorrow to try to find the site of an old grist mill dating back to the 1880's.

oh, the fact that you wanted to "rent" made me think you didn't own a machine (the usual person dealers rent them to: is persons who don't own one, trying to find something they lost). Then you're going to have a hard time finding a dealer who specifically has a 250 rent. I mean, even if you had a Garrett dealer in your town, there's no guarantee that he'd be renting the 250, as opposed to any other number of Garretts over the years that've been made. By comparison, the Whites dealer in my town just happens to have an old 6000d series 3 as their rental. But needless to say, Whites has had dozens of models over the years, so for someone to come in and specifically say "I want to rent an MXT" or "Classic 3" or "Eagle", etc... the store owner would probably look at them with glazed eyes and offer to rent them their single rental model: a 6000d series 3.

You're best bet is to borrow one for the day from someone in the area. Maybe state specific forums would lead to connections of whomever owns one in your area. Some of the Whites lower end units mimick the abilities of the 250, so don't discount a Whites as just as good a turn-&-go machine as the 250. Like the prism, classics, etc... The sounds and quirks all vary, but in my personal opinion, the 250 is a very over-rated machine. I've hunted side-by-side with one, and they don't go deep, and don't have good target separation, TID, etc.... JMHO.

Hi Sue,

Take a look in some of the other threads for people who share your interest in the kind of metal detecting you are interested in. Check for folks who are close geographically, and in interest. Beach, relics, coins, tot lots... that sort of stuff, match up what your interested in.

Then start talking to them in the threads and see what machines they are using and what they are finding. People love to brag about their detector.

Next, ask if you can stop by where the person of interest is detecting some time and see how the machine performs. You will get some good advice, a little hands on experience, and get to see the machine in action. Best of all, you don't have to pay for a rental.

There is a generous group of folks here who are happy to pass on knowledge, tips, and experience.

And if your ever in St. Pete Florida and want to try out a Tesoro Sand Shark...

Too bad you aren't in Charlotte, I'd let you borrow mine for the day, or either go out with you and show you how to use it. You really can't go wrong with the Ace 250. They are a dandy machine! If your son likes MD'ing already and knows how to swing a detector, the 250 would work, there's not a lot to learn. There's presets, and you can turn the sensitivity up and down. If you are a mind to you can set up you own program on there. I tried it once to see if I could do it, I could and then I lfet it alone and use the presets all the time. I tend to go up and down with the sensitivity depending how trashy the soil is. And that's about it. I'm probably gonna get Little Ramapirate one for Christmas and his cousin is already planning on getting one for Christams. My son's 10 and his cousin's 15 and they both can swing mine and find about the same stuff I'm finding. They are easy machines, but you can make them more complicated if you want to. You can set up your own program and save it if you want to.

Keep us posted,
Ramapirate

check some of the tool rental places. I was renting a sewer auger some time back and noticed the shop had a fisher 1212 to rent.

The only person near me that I have met owns 2 White's and I have used his DFX300, I think that is what it was. But I don't have the money to buy a White's and if I did, I surely wouldn't spend it on a 13 year old that is just starting out.

I have read posts and reviews on several MD's and I feel that the ACE250 would be perfect for my son. I have never posted this about my son, but he does have a learning disability, so I need a basic, but good machine.

CWnut, I never thought of checking a tool rental place. I will have to find one local and give them a call.

Not that is has to do with your question, but here's a tip for when you first get him out with his new machine: Pick a spot where it's bound to be flush with easy coins. Not someplace where the pickens are hard to work for. Detecting is like gambling: if the first time you ever pulled a slot machine, you get a win, you're hooked for life, no matter how many times you loose thereafter. It's the same for detecting: If the first time out, a person only finds a few pulltabs, they'll think "this is boring", and never get into it. But if the first time out they're scarfing up, then they're hooked  So get a virgin yard, or some place you've sample and know to be thick :o

Smurf, where in PA are you located?

Hal

I am about 40 minutes north of Pittsburgh.

I was hoping you were closer to the center of the state. Check out the for sale section on here. A member has a 250 for $150.

Thanks for the info, sent the person a PM about the MD's for sale.
