Prospecting for Gold is a lot harder than looking for coins (coins tends to be predictable sizes, predictable content mass as well as consistent in metal alloys for different coin types), unlike free gold which can be any shape, any mass and any combination of minerals. Look in the Gold Prospecting With Metal Detectors section of this forum for more discussion. Also, a general purpose detector may find Gold Rings well, bit its not likely to help you much when prospecting for gold. A gold optimized detector would be needed - the concept of 'cheap' detector does not really apply to them.

A "cheap" gold detector would be a used fisher gold bug 2 or whites gmt, $400 - $800. An expensive gold detector would be minelab or tesoro and they can cost upwards of $8000 new.

If you only have $300, it's worth it to buy a used one off of ebay. The last time I looked there were a bunch older Goldmasters for well under $300.

I would try not to go much more older than 10 - 15 years on the gmt, at least a vsat. The circuitry is better, better battery life, etc.

thanks yall this was a VERY big help
