Curious if anyone has a clue what this tag or clip may be. Found it while metal detecting my historic property, been occupied since 1750's. I found it pretty deep, almost a foot if I remember correctly. It appears to be copper maybe, possibly brass. Looks like it was stamped out by a machine, probably not too old, maybe from a horse saddle or something.

Any ideas?

Face to an older belt buckle.

Agreed. There seems to be a marking on the back... A bit of cleaning might help figure out more, but I'd ballpark the age to be from the 1920's-30's.

The marking on the back is just the imprint stamp of the "R" if that's what you're talking about?

looking at the back, the bottom part that folds upward has a word imprinted in it. probably either the brand name (possibly Swank) or it will say what the metal is (i.e.- brass)

Well, curiosity got the best of me, couldn't find a magnifying glass and my iPhone camera just refuses to focus good up close...so I decided to splash it with a bit of toilet bowl cleaner [emoji39] hope I didn't ruin it!

Now I can read it clearly, found another marking on the back. The top one says "HICOCK USA" bottom mark says "MASTER PLATE" I've already googled it but nothing is really matching in images.

Sorry, misspelled it, top mark is "HICKOK USA" also it appears to be copper. On a side note it just so happens my last name is Rose so really liking this vintage monogrammed "R" thingy, maybe I'll clean it more and make a tie clip out of it or something, just wish I knew exactly what it was. Been looking at pics of vintage Hickok USA Master Plate monogrammed things, but it doesn't match any of the belt buckles or anything else, just not sure.

It should read HICKOK... these are common buckles from the 20s through the 40s. If you google that spelling you will see how the buckle looked when it was complete. They are usually Sterling, at least the few that I have found have been, with a bronze loop for the belt. Yours is missing. Nice buckle though.

Mine appears to be copper? If it's silver its extremely tarnished?
