I hit some good ground again, finally. The oldest wheatie here is 1910. the dimes are 1920 and 1923. The broken 18k gold earring is shown just as I found it, with 2 backs on it for some reason, which was lucky for me, because I had my Ace 250 set for coins only. The 2nd back is probably brass, which I think must have read as a dime, at least it was the only item I found in that hole. I'll be returning with the ace set for jewelry to see if I can find the rest of the broken earring.

this is my first gold. Without the extra brass back, it weighs .51 dwt, about $30 worth.

I'm guessing the pin came from a military type hat or uniform. It has a bolt and brace on the back for mounting. It's a heavy piece of brass, and still has some fragments of gold plating on it - I'm afraid I may have polished off some. I must remember that I always get in trouble trying to clean my finds.

The rainbird shows how everyday objects were once artful metaphors, a bit of beauty in an ordinary mechanical gadget, adding a touch of grace to a well-cared-for lawn. Here's a video taken as I test it out.

The rainbird is wonderful. I assume you dug it? And how deep was it?

The collar pin is U.S. Army Adjutant General (Enlisted) - World War 2 or later.....Depends on the back to date it better. The sprinkler is cool, and even better that it still works.

Yes i did dig it up. It was 2-3 inches under the turf, in the swale, actually. The swale is only about 3' wide now, with new concrete curbing on one side, and a sidewalk, probably from mid-century, on the other side. It's an old wooden house, one of the oldest in the area, probably from the 1910's. Newer houses, even those built in the 20's and 30's, are almost all made of concrete block and poured cement.

Fantastic you know that! Thanks.

Yes, I really enjoy that rainbird. It slipped out of my hand while I was removing it from the hose, got a few nicks in it, but not too bad.

Here's picture of the back:

I believe that particular pin back would be post WW2 up to early 50's.....I'm really not certain. I've seen a few in that style, but I'm really not sure how long it was used.

Great Finds Man...I can tell you one thing thou...that Ive actaully found gold that rang up as Penny/Dimes before.. The first Gold ring I found was 8+gram 10k ring that kept bouncing from a dime to penny..and i was very suprised to see what came out of the whole...The odd thing was I check the whole with a PinPointer and nothing was there..and I put the ring over my coil and it read as a Straight up Nickel...Sometimes the ACE's Read funny...but its a good thing for the most part

I've thought of one scenario that explains what happened in the case that you cite.

I think, from my experience with the Ace 250, that pop-tops which read as nickels (or as pop tops) when you get the ace right over them, will give a penny/dime or even a quarter read some slight distance away from the pop-top, but it's an unstable read which does not totally repeat on every swing, and it can change from dime to penny or maybe even to quarter.

Maybe your gold ring was acting like a pop-top; you got a penny/dime read off to one side of it (it would have read as a nickel if you'd been right over it), so you initially dug a hole off to the side of it looking for that dime or penny. The pinpointer didn't pick it up because you were a bit off. Then, maybe you enlarged the hole and then you found the ring.
