Interesting read. Maybe in the future treasure hunters will look for specific microbial signatures to find, identify and evaluate shipwrecks. Perhaps a microbiologist will even be a standard addition to the crew when searching:

Things like age, country of origin, type of ship, etc might have distinct microbial signatures that could be used to determine what is on board, and if it is worth checking out.
