"MIDDLETOWN PLATE CO., Middletown, Conn."...This business was started in 1864 by Edward Payne and Henry Bullard, making Britannia and plated ware under the name of Payne...more..."

Welcome to Tnet.

Nice cup.

The company was formed in 1864 but initially traded under the name of one of its founders (Edward Payne). They incorporated as the ‘Middletown Plate Company’ in 1866.

After they became part of the International Silver Company in 1899, the Middletown factory was immediately closed and production transferred to the Meriden factory of the Wilcox Silver Plate Company and the business merged with the Meriden Britannia Company.

Nevertheless, the old Middletown Plate Company marks continued to be used under the International Silver umbrella until 1921.

The style of the mark is consistent with 20th Century production.
