Hey hey diggers!
I found this button and despite looking in the obvious places , I didnt find anything to connect it.

Its 22-23 mm in diameter, slightly domed, brass/copper alloy, found at a 1810- 1850( roughly) site

Construction of the button suggests 1830s or so

I've included a shot of the backmark but I'm not 100% on the orientation...the script to me is IU but perhaps that's up to interpretation.
Anyway if this speaks to any of you ( come on UK guys) or you have an angle I can follow I'd really appreciate it.

Where (directionally) was this found. Backmark says “Robinson ……….xx”. There was a Robinson in mass. from 1820s-40s. To me letters on front are “LU”. Don’t see it in Albert’s.
Found in Atlantic Canada
It doesnt look like anything American I've seen before but you never know

That company was known as Robinson 's Jones and Co. later R&W Robinson but ivenot seen Robinson &Co. attached to them...can you provide a link to the name and backmark?
nscuwolf thanks for the info you sent me.
Backmark is the same company.
American made...but for what?
They were military button manufacturers so I U still may have a military connection

Not in the 'Livery' Button category but probably a company button of some kind.

I've put this one in the ' other ' category ...
The one possible answer is Indiana University...originally founded in 1820..fits with the timeframe of the button but even that would be a long shot and I dont have anything to back that up...just a wag

Hey hey diggers!

Big update...I have an id for this button!
I first have to admit that I messed up and made a mistake.
I had the button upside down.
The script should have read N L
National Lancers..Massachusetts Militia.
I'll have more to say about this button in my next post.
