The pinpointing at times can be challenging because it's the trade-off for finding tough, sometimes masked, sometimes on edge, targets. The first struggle someone would probably have is getting used to the DD coil if they have always used concentric. (DD is well worth it with so much better coverage - and is why the PP is a little harder) In time the majority of targets will pinpoint well for you, but there will always be a small % for various reasons that are tough to locate. If you hunt areas where you have to be neat you will definitely want a probe to assist your effort.

I find pinpointing is easy with mine. I rarely miss a target. When I get the target centered I pull it straight back, when the tone stops I find it is at the top of the coil where the lil dip is in it.
I hope this helps. HH

I used a White's XLT for a while, and have used the Explorer SE for a year. While I like the SE a lot more, I feel the XLT had slightly better pinpointing on shallow objects. Deeper objects seem about the same.

I don't think the pinpointing should discourage you from buying the SE. It's really not that bad (the pinpointing), and you'll get used to it in time.
