Detector(s) used
Tesoro Sand Shark & Cortes <-- I love this thing!
I'm brand new to metal detecting and I want to get into the sport. I have been researching quite a bit for the past few weeks and I have decided to look for a Minelab Sovereign GT. How much should I be looking to spend on a used model? If that is too much how about a used Minelab Sovereign Elite? I have a budget of about $600 and I want to make sure I get the most bang for the buck.

Thanks,
Tom

Bang your buck about a hundred more and get a new one that you know works well out of the box. The Sov GT is a great detector and can be used in the saltwater sand too unlike a lot of other detectors. Excellent nulling on Iron and still locate the good target very near the iron.

hmmm $700? I think I would be willing to pay that for a new GT. Thanks!

Sandman is correct as usual, if your going to spend $600, IMO, I would up the out of pocket money and buy new. If you can find a new one at $700 grab it quick, I think your going to find most are selling at $800 new but still well worth every penny of the investment.

I have 2 Sov GT's, 1 for land, 1 for water, (1 has been water proofed), and they are both fantastic machines. My land machine paid for itself July 4th 2008 at Daytona Beach hunting the wet sand........ water machine has paid for itself as well ........

Good luck and good hunting...............

If this is your first Minelab get the GT.

A used Explorer XS or II can be had for $500 to $650.

The Explorer is deeper (about 3-5 inches with stock coil on coins) but about 10 times more difficult to learn (master) and about 3 times more difficult to use.

The GT and Explorers are deadly on rings.

Example for comparison: The Explorer XS with 6 inch coil will detect a 14K gold wedding band at 9+ inches. This is about the best a GT can do with the Tornado (stock 10" coil).

You'll love the GT

watch out for the notch discrimination........... it can be your best friend or worst enemy unless you learn to use it right
