Minieball?

Found this today. It's heavy as all get out. Has a crosshatch design and a hole in the tip that doesn't go all the way through. It also has a name etched in it - "JAY (with the Y backwards)."
Any info is greatly appreciated!!

I believe that it's probably a modern muzzle loading bullet. The cross hatching is meant to hold the lubricant.

That makes sense. The name on it is slightly quizzical. I've heard of names being written on old ones, but not much about more modern ones.

It is a tip from a throwing dart.
