I regularly scan eBay auctions for possible gold watches. I saw this one and took a chance. Everything screamed it was gold. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1550423636.360207.webp
I got the watch and as soon as I pulled it out of the box I knew it was gold. Extremely dense and heavy for it’s size. I opened the back and sure enough it was 14kt. The case back alone is 2g and I expect the watch to weigh out around 6g. Just proves there are bargains to be had even on eBay. BTW this is my 4th gold watch I sniped off of the bay.

Thanks for the tip.

Nice Ebay find! :occasion14:

Thanks for the tip.

Here was my rationale.

1. Bright gold color, no signs of wear and quality of case including thicker than normal wire lugs which is necessary for softer metals like gold.
2. “Maker unknown” indicates the seller possibly did not open the back.
3. Checked seller and based on auctions did not specialize in watches or jewelry
4. Gut instinct.

Hope this helps. Anyone else hunt for gold on eBay?

I am only half serious here...

was an attempt at some humor thinking about the person that actually owned it seeing your post.

Ha! You would never make that mistake.

I've been looking and we'll it's not common, but I'm sure they come along. Those are some good reference points you've mentioned.

Search 'buy it now' only and sort by newly listed and you can find some steals from newbie sellers from time to time. Patience and diligence pays off eventually.

Another score and best one yet. Saw this lot for $28 BIN and pulled the trigger immediately. The Girard Perregaux was a great watch and worth it. I thought it could possibly be gold. The Illinois looked gold too but I have seen many gold filled ones I wasn’t sure. Five minutes after purchasing and paying the seller said she received a communication from someone to cancel the sale and he would pay $150. She said she would not do that. I told her I would review the watches and if there was any reason I would make her whole. Turns out the PG was gold filled but the Illinois was a sold 18kt gold model which I immediately told her. True to my word then I found and purchased cow milking equipment of hers for $127.00 but told her to keep the money but do send me the item. So she got the $150 and I got the GP , 18kt Illinois and a gold filled Bulova. All worth more than $150. The Illinois weighs between 5 and 6g. I have one more lot I purchased with possible gold. I will let you know how that one goes. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1562078633.148688.webp

I tried your technique and found I just might not have the patience for searching all those listings and speculating rather or not they're gold. I did however find this at a yard sale. Lady said, she thought all it needs is a battery. I said that's fine, thinking she didn't know it's a mechanical watch. Looking inside she was right. It's been converted to a quartz.
