Found this today in my change...Canadian nickels are only 3.5% copper but there is a LOT of copper showing here! Never seen another nickel like it....

I'm assuming it's a mint error.

It's missing the plating 2% Ni in those spots? and looking at her nose probably acid damaged HH

It looks like Elizabeth II has a burnt nose . If so I think someone used it in a flashlight to make better contact.
The coin also looks like it was in a pile of copper coins and vinegar used to clean them. Not sure about it being made that way.
Coins have been used in a fuse box .

I don't think it's a matter of lost plating...nickels are 95% steel so I think the 3.5% copper is part of the nickel plating. The copper showing is actually part of the molecular structure of the coin...further research lead me to something called an improperly annealed planchette...something that takes place at the mint. No value for such a mint error but still pretty cool!

Looks like an electroplating experiment to me.

First off, Canada Nickels never contained copper at all so happening at the mint would be impossible. It was electroplated in a science experiment or just someone with to much time on their hands who wanted to plate a nickel. I have seen plated nickels before, they look the same (I was doing electrolysis once on some relics and was first experimenting on how and figured out if you do the setup in reverse with a metal anode the item on the other end will get electroplated just like that). It was not completely plated due to lack of time in electroplating setup or some plating wore off though.

Oops, I did not know that, I though they were all steel and nickel plated and the old ones were pure lol, I guess I'm wrong.
