Minus Tide in Galveston

[The Beep Goes On]

We hit the beach in Galveston today. It was a minus tide (-0.96) and the wind was blowing from the North. Klopek and I were the only ones out there today, which was kind of strange for a minus tide...bad weather probably had something to do with it. I was surprised with how many targets there were considering the number of detectorists that hit this beach.

Excuse my ignorance, I have no intention of hijacking this post but since I'm new at beach tecting as many of yew know I gotta ask this question while it's here in front of me. I don't think I understand this minus tide thingy too well. I didn't think it hit everywhere at once but I've noticed a number of beaches posted as having the minus tide in very close proximity to each other. So is that the case that it occurs once or twice a year and in localized areas or is it more spread out like the entire east coast ?

Minus tides - I am no expert, but tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. If the moon and sun are in the same region of the sky and pull in the same direction then you can get very high or very low tides. I imagine that the tides follow the rotation of the earth relative to the position of the moon and sun...so, in general, tides are a local (along the same longitude) wide-area effect . I am sure someone out there can provide a better explanation.

Klopek didn't take his waders into the water very deep...they are fine to use up to waist deep...if you can stand you should be ok. Using them in a river is a different story.
