I'm in one of those binds. Venture out to look for new homesteads, or keep hitting some that have given up nice finds and keep producing small amounts. I have decided to keep hitting familiar ground and looking at the signals the Nox 800 gives me (12-20 range) which typically turn out to be iron nails and spikes. So I'm looking at a lot of nails and bigger pieces of iron such as broken cast iron pots, hinges, and farm tools. Plus this forest is mature without much bushy undergrowth. The tiny nymph ticks that are out are tough to see on skin.
After finding seven shoe buckles without chapes and tines over the past 10 months, today I found my first chape. The other two pieces seem like buckle mechanisms. Also a brass tack with square pin, a very small button and lead shot quite deep. Stumbled on the pottery while digging a nail.
Digging up all of the iron is helping me to better understand the machine. Iron does give a lower pitch signal whereas good metals a higher pitch. Still, I will dig anything 20 and over regardless of pitch. Eventually I will score.
