Hey, it’s me again with probably someone’s garden pot. I generally find tons of pottery of various ages, but this piece is odd to me. Generally I can see a clear sign of glaze on most modern pieces, but I cannot find it readily on this piece. Algae is stained on the front, and fine sand is throughout it some spots. A faded red pigment is also present on the front. I was wondering if it could be native of the historic period, kind’ve like Kasita Red Filmed Pottery? If it is modern, can anybody help date the shred or help me recognize how to identify glaze. Thanks as always and sorry for rambling. Thanks for the reply, I was just so unsure about this piece due to it being smooth in comparison to my others. I guess maybe it’s a difference in temper and firing? Thank you regardless.

Wash it up in Dawn and get the crud off it and look on the edge to see if there are any grasses in the clay.

I tried cleaning it, but the creek seems to have leached into the clay. I think if in any temper is visible on it, it would possibly be in the form of the fine grit. I just am still not sure if it is of native origin, as it is smooth in comparison to my woodland era shreds. I still cannot tell if it is modern, as I can’t readily find a glaze. Thanks for the replies, if anyone has any suggestions then they’d be much appreciated. Thanks again

I have found something that looks identical to that in the river behind my house on the rock bars .... a few of them weren’t as river stained and they are almost white in color .... I was scratching my head too not sure what they are But after being able to break one in half and looking at the inside I believe mine was made from clay .... I don’t think I brought any home with me but from what I remember they look exactly the same , if I make it out this weekend I’ll look for a piece ..... that was the other deciding factor for me that the weren’t artifacts they seemed to easy so come by / too many of them

That’s interesting, the similarities. Do you mean when you broke it open, it was just hardened natural clay or a relatively modern form of pottery? I suppose I could try the same on my object. Thanks for replying.

To me it looked like natural clay and Oddly enough the pieces I found were similar in shape to yours most seem to come to a narrow rounded point on one side

Interesting, I tried to break off a bit of my piece, but it appeared to be fired. This forum had been helpful in determining the origin, but I am still undecided about this piece. It’s pottery of some kind, but I cannot determine the age/culture. I will hold onto it. It is strange being smooth, but not blatantly glazed. Thanks for the replies.

It is my understanding that some of their pottery was made smooth without designs too. To me whether it has a design or smooth tells a story, when they were happy and living well they had time to make designs on their pottery and when they were having hard times they were too busy trying to survive to be decorative. I read that during the times they were basically enslaved by the Spanish (or other white men) their pottery was plain. Sad really :( Maybe that is what this pottery is a reflection of, hard times.

I find a lot of smooth pieces of pottery and just looking at the photo it looks like I see pieces of charcoal. JMO I would lean toward na pottery. I have a creek that I do find clay like that but it is easy to break.
