Monsanto: The evil corp. Has anyone been personally affected by them?

what if the Monsanto seeds cross pollinate with an unwanted plant and it eventually morphs into something that our present day weed killers can't kill?

In a sense, this is already happening (much to Monsantos dismay, I'm sure). As with many of the 'bugs' we target with antibiotics, some individuals among the targets (weeds, in this case) have developed a natural resistance to the "attacker" (Roundup). As the individuals that show resistance multiply, the attacker effectively loses its effect of the target. It's simply Darwinism accelerated......and demonstrates the fantastic ability of life to adapt to adversity. Roundup is losing its effectiveness against many weeds. At this rate, "Roundup Ready" won't mean squat in a few years, and Monsanto will have to start the whole process over again.

Diggem'

A lot of people didn't get my initial argument. I wasn't arguing 'genitic monsters'... I was arguing the fact that if they test for the DNA in the seed of a farm that is contaminated by pollen, they will take that farmer to court and say "He stole our seeds. Therefore, he owns us a lot of back money, as well as future money".

The seeds get pollinated by wind. So, the DNA of the original seed is contaminated, and here comes the monsanto police. The Monsanto company determines that the original seeds of organic joe, now has a strain of dna from the monsanto line. And he is in deep trouble. Even though, he did not steel any seed, and only keep his own organic seed in the elevator.

Watch the link for the video I gave in the very first post. It will enlighten anyone. It will also upset you greatly.

This was how I took your post
& Why I said I Don't think it would stand up in court.

You can't Sue Nature

I do get your original post Mike; Monsanto is suing farmers because their pollen is pollinating other farmers fields. Then Monsanto takes them to court. Then the farmer either pays Monsanto or hire lawyers and pay them. In either case, the farmer loses and big, rich Monsanto wins. Then the organic farmer has to charge more for their product. I was merely expanding on the conversation by mentioning heirloom seeds and their value. I also never said a crop could cross pollinate with a weed, some people can read what I wrote a hundred times and still not understand what has been said. Some may even try to twist what people say to promote their own agenda. This is what was said, " I'm not saying it can happen but, what if the Monsanto seeds cross pollinate with an unwanted plant and it eventually morphs." "I'm (key word here) '"NOT"' saying"......."I'm NOT saying".......Why all of these Representatives and Senators are getting involved in this non-political controversy is beyond me.

Monsanto....Has anyone been personally affected by them? Monsanto, along with Dow Chemicals, was one of the major supplier or a chemical named, "Agent Orange." Agent Orange was a defoliant, mixed with fuel oil, and sprayed by aircraft to denude the jungle trails in Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia so we could more easily target men and supplies traveling down the trails from the north. Many American soldiers, and probably a lot of the Vietnamese people were exposed to the chemical which could cause a myriad of neurological and physical problems, many of which are still being treated today for exposure to the chemical.

If you get a chance, watch the movie "Food Inc." It is a documentary about the food we eat and Monsanto shows their true colors. Very informative movie worth watching.

Absolutely. In fact, there is a site that you can google "Watch Documentaries online". All of them are on youtube, so it's not a hack site, but a site that offers viewers good vids to watch. that site is where I learned about the 42 day chicken, the drugged cattle, and the no-daylight (zombie) pig. I'm not a nature nut or even a vegetarian, but there is one phrase that comes to mind... If these places had glass walls, we'd all be vegetarians. I think, in 'Food Inc, they do a part on a farmer that is selling to the public organic chickens, pigs, etc. The video is horrendous, but considering what we do not see, he's actually a saint.

One could argue that with the massive population that the world has today, we are forced to produce this stuff. Others could argue, perhaps it's just the deregulation of farmers that has led to the necessity of price wars.

Jeff, the problem is that Monsanto's seeds will only grow if sprayed with their brand of fertilizer. Imagine what could happen in terms of cross pollination and contamination to our food supply.

I know you aren't a farmer, but nothing in your statement is factual. Monsanto's seed has been bred to be able to be sprayed with the weedkiller "roundup" or the generic version there of. Roundup is a nonspecific herbicide, and a godsend for conventional farmers across the U.S. By the way, roundup ready seed will grow just fine no matter what kind of fertilizer is used. In fact, i'm not aware of Monsanto having their own brand of fertilizer. You may be confusing fertilizer and herbicide. If you don't think roundup ready corn and soybeans are in our nations food supply, you are very wrong. Ever eat corn chips? Fry something in vegetable oil? Eat a twinky? If so, you have been eating this "frankenseed".
