At a stoplight in Breck this a.m. and saw this moose crossing the street. Actually kind of a common thing here in town. Went on down to Castle Rock Gulch where there's tons of red and yellow jasper flakes on one particular knoll above the creek. No worked points though. I don't know about this. Little too much for a roving group of hunters, but good site for a workshop away from a main camp, but no clue where the main camp was. Maybe just random rocks deposited by a glacier on that one particular high knoll (aha!) Twin Lakes was clear of ice now.

Isn't that around trout Creek pass?. I would think those flakes were the result of tool making. The material is typical of what most of the completed artifacts I've found all along that region of the Arkansas River.

Beautiful scenery!

West and south of the pass, like you're goin to Bassam Park. There's a documented prehistoric jasper quarry off northwest of there. I've looked this spot over a couple of times now and it's kinda like crime scene investigation. There's a few large anvil type rocks there and you generally find quite a few flakes around them. I just took this one pic of what somebody gathered up and placed in a spiral type design. I did find what appeared to be a grinding stone which might be an indicator of a more long term camp, and a couple of flakes that just had to be produced by percussion, I think. Still, I've seen Mother Nature do some funny things to rocks that can confuse you. If I find a definitely worked point, knife, scraper, or whatever, then I won't have any doubt.

Look closer to the Arkansas for finished artifacts. I've found the same jasper pieces down here. Not saying they come from that same quarry, but I do think it's possible. I've been to that site your at and found little finished product. I think there were groups of people who broke up the raw material and gather just those pieces for trade with the plains tribes. They did some mining, merchandising and stockpiling. imo

Beautiful pics!! I must say, I envy you with all that beauty up there! We used to have moose in this area but the last of them left (or were hunted out) about 12-15 years ago. The wife was lucky enough to catch a quick glimpse of one while we were moving here. ...I missed it! :BangHead:
