Certainly someone with some detailed knowledge of hard rock mining sculpted that work. That rock drill would be a later model then the original widow maker. This one is commonly known as the post & column drifter drill. The post can be jacked either horizontal against the ribs of the drift or like it is now jacked against the floor and back. The last one of those I sold was to ASARCO Black Cloud mine in Leadville. They were going to use it in an old mine of theirs in Bonanza over by Villa Grove in some reclamation work. Only difference to that drill and the sculpted drill here is an air power feed to a hand crank feed. That's some pretty awesome works in snow.

They probably didn't win cause they appealed more to a select group of intellectual type students of history. (haha!) The Canada sculpture refers to a World Heritage Archaeological site near Alberta, Canada, and the mining sculpture, well quite honestly, most visitors up here picture hard rock mining as some guy that looks like me with a pick and shovel, banging away on the side of the mountain. And the sculptors had to use a little artistic license and work with the snow block they had to work with. I thought they were great and had merit, but the judges didn't.

I got an idea. You and I could enter the contest next year. We'll do a sculpture of a cannabis plant with columbine flowers. I'm thinking that would win the grand prize.

Few years back I was doing business in Nucla Colo. and there's a back rode that runs from Montrose to Nucla. Way out in the middle of nowhere I came on these two gals with a busted down v-dub van. They where part of a group called the Rainbow cult or something?. I put a tow rope on that van and we drug it about to the top then a torrential rain began coming down and even in 4 wheel I could no longer drag that van in all the mud. So we abandoned it. On the way down the other side a rainbow appeared and that was a sign of great blessing for these gals. They we're all dressed in colorful long dresses and beads and stuff. Got them down to Nucla and ran in to some local Nucla teeny boppers who had big jacked up 4x4 who were itching to get those things out for a challenge and those gals thought that was absolutely far out. They sure were a interesting duo. They asked me if I got high and wanted to partake in a toke, but I declined. Those teenagers in Nucla sure didn't decline the offer. That's just one episode of all the years being on the road. I have a few more but it would be a lot to put down.
