Good going on the 22k ring...the highest I've managed is a ladies bracelet stamped 800 or 19.2k Portuguese gold I believe.

I'd venture to guess you need at least a minimal amount of alloy to add a bit of strength to the gold...pure gold is much to soft and subject to bending.
That said I've seen a few chains and rings posted which were 24k gold.
