Very good questions Bill. I've seen some pictures in books, of awls with handles like that, but I think it's a knife. I believe the bone got buried in soil, and ended up in the creek fairly recent. Bone does not last long in a stream. Often, animals die in the creek, yet we notice a general absence of bones. We find the occasional animal bone, but if it is not in tact, it is rotten and falling apart. Must of the small pieces of bone we find, appear to be at least partially fossilized. Keep in mind, I do not know for sure if these were artifacts. I think they could be. I think it does have to do with soil. Here in Iowa, you know we have that rich dark soil, maybe that has something to do with it. We don't find much flint, but I think we're doing good on the bone stuff.
