Too much snow and frozen ground to be tearing up people's yards, so we made another trip back to our Colonial site.
We've been finding all our flat buttons and big coppers in a very small area here. We figured it'd be a waste of time until we get some thawed ground, instead we managed to chop a few more buttons out of the ground today.
The boy started the day finding a couple flat buttons then a 1908 V nickle? He also found a piece of pewter spoon.
On an earlier trip I found a piece that fits perfectly to the piece he found today. The two pieces were about 15" away from where each piece was found. He found 4 buttons total for the day.
I found a old coroaded buckle, 3 more flat buttons and some mystery piece. My first impression with the mystery piece was a rosette??

Nice finds! Thanks for sharing...

Ha ha, you guys are hard core addicted and making great memories.
Great finds, I can't wait until things thaw out for you guys. When it does go back to the very spots you have been finding this stuff and go over them low and slow from different directions and dig every signal, even the scratchy iffy signals. Wait until the thaw if you can resist, most of it will be trash, some of it will probably surprise you!

Nice hunt. Should thaw next week. Week after next should be back to normal. Man I hope so.

Well your in the right place....

Here's another pic of the mystery piece, front and back. Found this where we've been finding all the flat buttons and big coppers.Came up as 45-46 on the AT Pro.
The back has a build up of rust/corrosion.
Any thoughts what it might be?

Good hunt! when the weather warms up I'll be back out. HH

Nice finds Deershed! You and the boy are putting a hurtin' on that spot. Glad to see that were able to get out for a little. I can hardly wait to see the stuff you get when the ground thaws. GL&HH!

That's a good spot keep hammering it! :icon_thumright:

Probably a top of an older sytle 2 piece button.

great buttons, cant believe you get thru this ground

Let's just say you pick your hits. Lol

We had our regular digging shovels, hatchet, 3" heavy duty screwdriver (for a pry bar) and a pocket knife. I gave up on more then just one hole b/c of frozen ground. You better be in shape if you swing with frozen ground. lol

Today kicked my butt.... all I got today were 2 more flat buttons and a Winchester headstamp?

I have one question...when you make finds like these, why would you even consider a yard? I prefer a field over someone's lawn any day.

With all the history in the area we live, most the areas away from the yards have been hit hard. I asked one farm about metal detecting and got a straight out no. When I asked that same guy about shed hunting he said, sure no problem. He went on to tell us he's had so many problems over the years he wanted nothing to do with any metal detecting. We live about 15 miles from Gettysburg.
We hear it all the time when asking farms, it's been hit several times over the years, there's nothing there. We hear the same thing at some of the yards we ask, not near as often as the farms.
It seems the yards don't get the pressure the farms do.
The property were hitting now probably has a 3 acre yard, total property is probably 10 acres. There's a nice size field that was an old orchard then turned into a pasture. We plan on hitting it later when the ground thaws.
I wish we could find some bigger properties with a mix of woods and fields. It's hard finding farms that haven't been annoyed for years from being metal detected.

I know your pain, in my area it is the same way. Around here there is a high number of people that have done metal detecting for years. To find the old stuff it is very hard to get permission because of it. I try to explain to some of these owners that there is still stuff hiding, but most are convinced there is nothing left. I just have to move on, keep asking.
