More digging

Some finds from tonight. The small brown is a Vicks va-tro-nol. The white rain is a shampoo bottle from the 40s. The green is a fresco bottle. And the ones with the flowers are part of a set of 3. I have 2 of them. They say Ball on the bottom and we're thousand island bottles back in the day. Quite rare from my understanding. They are currently soaking in super clean. I think my favorite from tonight is either this white rain shampoo bottle or this small emerald green. Not sure what it was used for.

Some of them cleaned up.

Here’s some of the bottles I found all cleaned up. The jugs were a pain to clean. They were completely packed with mud. Took hours to get them cleaned up. I use the super clean method mixed with water on my bottles. I almost forgot, my 5Ft probe came in today, so now I will be able to probe for bottles. Can’t wait to try it. We have an ice storm going on today so unfortunately I won’t be able to get anything done.

Tonight

Went back tonight and pulled these. I completed my thousand island set. I now have all 3 bottles and they are pretty. The two quark tops came from a well outback that I’m digging. It’s filled in but... I don’t trust it. Think I’m going to tether up while digging it. It’s rumored that the family before ours threw a box of arrowheads down that well and some gold coins. I’m probably 6 feet down now. Hit water so I called it quits. I will keep this story updated. If the the coins are way down in the bottom they will have to stay lost. I’m not risking it for a legend. The well is lined with flat stone rocks all around. Tons of glass inside it. So we’ll see what it provides. Does it sound to risky to keep going?

Honestly I’m starting to wonder that myself. This hole just opened up in the backyard where the old 1800s house used to be. I never got to witness this house. So I don’t know where anything was at. I feel like a well would be more symmetrical on the walls. I will get some more pictures.

Yes, much more care would have been taken for a well. The water you have in the hole could be from seasonal wetting. Wait till the hot dry weather. Ask any old timers or a local well driller how far down the water table could be. I think the flat stone wall will protect you. Someone had to go to the bottom digging it and laying up those stones. You also could have other privy holes close by.

good advise on waiting for drier temps as the water table will drop during the summer into fall. More than likely it's a well instead of a privy as it's stone line doing down. Why would they do that for that for a hole that was oil to fill up in a few years?
If the stone is secure then the chances of collapse is lessoned, but not totally out of the picture.
From being buried while digging isn't a good day-happened when I was a pre-teen we had a double tunnel collapse-I'm only here today because of my brother being able to get out of the upper one and dig me out.
Makes a person leery of going into anything like that again if hand dug.
Strange thing was we went to another site later on that day-the whole hill side of 40ft had reburied the tunnel. That sight drove home the message in our young heads...........

A stone lined privy? Why would they do that? Because they had the time and money.
I have an 1860's permission where the privy was built before the house. It is 4 feet diameter, brick lined, cut stone covered. The corner rock for the house bearing beams sits on the cover.. Then a privy room was added to the back of the house. I started to dig the privy, but it was too much work for my old body of 77. The stone lined well is on the other side of the house in the back. Been filled in. The hand operated pressure pump is still there on the ground.
