Well, I went to the ammo dump site again today to do some test digs. I wanted to see where the trail of ammo ended. I think I walked about 1/4 of a mile or more following one road.. then went up this hill where they were cutting down trees. Along the road that was on the hill, I found some stuff, but after a bit it just died off. Since it was starting to get dark i walked to the top of the hill, and detected the other road that ran kind of parallel to the one I was on. Then I started hitting stuff again. I found that all the bullets are in organized areas. One section is detonators, another K 98 rounds, then I found some MG 42 rounds. I think it was a total of 60 bullets today, some of them are mg 42 round(they are a little shorter and fatter than 50 cal rounds). There are TONS of targets, and I was getting picky since it was just a test dig. I also found part of an m42 helmet, and a rusted out stg 44 magazine. I am 99% sure it is a helmet piece. I added a pict of a helmet, and drew a line around the piece I found. The helmet piece I found looks like they filled the helmet with frags, then blew it up! Then it was prob run over a few times. Its not a piece of shrapnel. There is even the hole for the rivet, but the rivet is missing. The lower piece is folded over, and I don't want to mess with it, since its rather hard to bend, and it could break. All the stuff I have been finding is either on the surface, or just about 4 inches (or less) down. It looks like it was all out on the surface, not buried. I still have a LOT of area to cover. Then I wil work my way across the street to where the bunker ruins are. I also found an ox shoe.. only 1 tiny tiny bit of foil from a gum wrapper. NO TRASH in this place! its wonderful!

I also went to the mg 42 nest that is 4 mintues from our house. The ground has changed a bit there I think, bec there are these maybe 10 yr old trees that were planted there. The hole that we thought could of been the actual foxhole was filled with a ton of junk dirt.. old tiles, glass pieces, etc. BUT, I did find one thing, that tells me I was in the right spot. I found the lower clip to either a german soldiers Y straps (like an american LBE), or its the bottom clip for the gas mask cainster. When i found it, it looked very very familiar to me ( i have a whole german gas mask setup in the states). So a few more digs there sometime, and maybe i can dig out some loot. They 2 soliders that were manning the gun buried all their gear, uniforms, and machine gun there. Even though the gun is gone, im sure there are things in there still. I did, however, grab a handful of poison ivy, or those "fire weeds".. my hands are still burning in areas :(

Enjoy the pictures! I have to clean some of this stuff up, and see what it looks like. The rusty magazine still has green paint on it :) Happy Hunting!

pict1: blue x detonators/fuses
red arrow is my helmet piece (i know it doesn't look like much) :)

pict 2: lime green arrow rusty magazine.. found it on the surface
aqua arrow, ox shoe

pict3: the piece that is outlined is the part I found (you can see the rivet here, its missing on the piece i found)

enjoy :)

Ouch...I would not have wanted to be in that helmet!

Wow Viper ,you are in the loot! Be careful some of that stuff can be dangerous. I will take you to that spot past Swadelbach. Lots of stuff but two many UXOs . Those stinging plants are rough. I have gotten in them several times. There is a plant that grows that works as antidote .A friend showed it to me one day after I got into a bunch of them but I am not sure I remember what it looks like . :-\

Yeah, some of those UXOs are dangerous! i am always careful when digging. If i find some in good shape, that aren't TOO dangerous, i can give them to that dude so they can be made safe. Still looking for some weapons, and field gear. I still have to find some cannonballs!!

That antidote would be nice :) I hate those damn weeds, they get all over me when i have to cut the grass :( Also, those mini rose bush vines with all the thorns. I got a hold of one today not knowing it was one of them...it was quite painful lol

According to the action report i have from the 10th armored div, they heard this ammo dump blow up. The germans blew the stuff up, I guess it wasn't the french like we were told. There are 2 bomber crashes near this place too, and also a concentration camp. The camp was used as a holding location for bailed out pilots and captured soliders. It would be cool to hunt if it is possible. I don't think there isn't much left at the site. Could be good for pictures too if i can't hunt there.

good stuff man. be careful out there, I don't want to read about you in the obits any time soon.

Be careful, that's a dangerous place you're digging in! Close to my area there was a train wreck during WWII that was carrying German ammo and weapons, they recovered some of it and hastily buried the rest. A friend told me of this site but I said no thanks and didn't pursue it. If you get a chance, you should check out the base area of Frauenberg castle near Baumholder, about a 30 min drive for you. There was a small town directly below the castle that was completely destroyed by a flash flood, the whole town went down hill towards the river and there is a lot of ground between the castle and river. There is also a real obvious point there on top of a hill where a lookout point probably was, overlooks the whole valley and river, a small dirt road leads right to it, easy access. HH, Mike

Heya Viper

Awesome finds again your miltary history collection is going to be great.

Happy hunting
Tom.

Yeah I am careful trust me on that!! I don't mess with AA rounds, mines, etc. I am always careful when I dig out here.. you just never know what your shovel might hit! I plan to do more test digs tomorrow. I have to try the area down another road. Then when I map all that out, ill hit across the street where the bunker remains are. I may take a piece of bunker home too.. just to say, hey I have a piece of bunker :) Hopefully I will find a few helemts and weapons. But so far, its just been bullets :) Happy Hunting!

Great finds, I'd love to be in your shoes. I wouldn't be able to walk for a
week or a month. I'd be out everyday I could get out. Keep those finds
coming and love the pics. Good luck with all your hunts.

I was stationed at Kelly Barracks outside of Stuttgart. It is still there and
in use. From what I was told way back when I was there, it was a SS camp
and under the camp are tanks that ran out of gas and as far as I know they
are still there.

YES, thats the place i heard about too!!!!! From what I heard, those tanks are under the current motor pool! ;) I love to take picts of them! I am on the cusp of finding a weapons cache! I was out for 8 hrs yesterday, and if I have time this weekned after drill, i am going to hunt some more :) thanks for lookin!

Hey Viper we are after the same things but we're a world apart ;)

Good luck buddy keep us upto date.
