Yesterday was a beautiful day sunny and in the 80s so I gabbed my sifter and headed down to the river bank. It's pretty amazing what gets missed until you sift it all out. I didn't find anything spectacular but any day I come across a conical ink is a good day. Actually I found two inks the second one is a very crooked Carter's. I'm pretty sure I'm going to bring the sifter out when ever I do a dig because I also came across a 1905 Indian head also that's makes two coins out of this dump. Thanks for looking- Justin

Nice finds Justin. That carter's is a site for sore eyes. I am beginning to think i may need to go back and dig my last pit just to sift it. ...I bet unclemac laughs when he sees this. He predicted i would go back before the year is up. Look , twins

Bass you should go sift your pit there could be small bottles civil war buttons coins jewelry anything really. I'm going to build a stand for my sifter to make it easier on the back.

Hey guys Im new to this kind of digging, any suggestions for plans on a good portable
sifter with legs. Im in texas so no water or tress to use it with. Guess a rocker type
would be best? I have a 120 yr old dump ground to hunt with lots of smalls to sift including beads
arrow heads jewelry coins and who knows what else.thx for help

Hey Yankee, not sure what type of soil you have. Are you in east or west tx? I'm in louisiana and our soil is very moist. Matter of fact, i don't plan on using any water with my sifter. I'm going to pile it up and using my hands work it through the hardware cloth.

I'm in west Texas very dry here. This dump site is fairly easy digging down to about 6". I thought about a 2x3 box set on some sort of aframe legs that you can rock the box but can't figure out an easy and portable way to do it, or what to make it out of, thx for info.

Hey Yankee Tom welcome to the tnet basement. It is worth sifting were ever your digging. I use a a small round sifter that about 18 inches that my grandfather gave me. It has to be at least sixty years old. It's good for ease if use I can strap it to my back pack.

Ya thx I've got a 5 gallon bucket that I cut the top third out of and put a screen in it, I use it for classifying rocks and dirt for prospecting. Looking for something a little bigger cause my hunting buddy and I are gonna work it together, so we can move more dirt.
I like the Gantry idea but would like something a little more portable. I was thinking about an aframe on both sides of box to be able to rock it but can't figure out how to attach the two, and make it be able to break down for carrying.

How about a home-made jobby- eye-screws on each corner of your sifter box, 2 collapsible tripods, wire cord to connect the corners to the tripod mounts (duck tape solves every problem that WD40 doesn't!). I mean, someone will have to hold it to keep it steady as you shovel in, but hey, it's portable(er) ... just a quick, off-the-cuff thought... Yak
