With the break in weather I decided it was time to dig a hole in a mates garden. Its been on my list of test pits for about a year.
It was an old late medieval house & next door had a shared well, it also used to be a toll house at one point. However, its the Roman layers I'm interested in, as it's within the old Roman Walled Town.
Most holes I dig have Victorian mixed up with Roman in the top layers but this one only had Victorian. The next layer 50cm-100cm were Medieval & then I hit the water table, so game over. No idea if the Roman layers were deeper, but I suspect it was too boggy back then.

I then detected for 15 minutes on the grass & got;
1 Button (Found the other with eyes only in the hole)
£2.04p
1961 Halfcrown
1736 Farthing (Gave to the owners as the best find)
Victorian Suspender Buckle (Found in hole)

Medieval Pot Shards, Animal Bones & Teeth were found at 50-100cm.

Final picture, my filled in hole.

Total time spent 1 hour 45 mins.

Holy cow, you did some sincere digging for those finds,
Yeap, much smaller than my usual test pits, one was over my head & the size of a grave! Water stopped play!

Cool finds, and the neatest job ever of covering the hole back up.

A very nice job on excavating the area and topping it off...beautiful work and cool finds! :occasion14:

Wow, you sure know how to do that in a clean manner. I'm impressed. Cool finds too!!

Wow if I found all that stuff in one hole.I'd be out buying a backhoe :)

I agree with RTW lol. A lot of digging for some great finds and a very nice job of making it look like nobody was there.

looked like a surgeon was at work there! very impressive in so many ways plus you have kept the owners very happy in both the find and how well you kept it clean. I don't think that would be possible in the soil around my parts but holy cow! A very proper dig and well done with awesome results. very cool too!

Congrats on your finds and returning everything to it's original condition. Good job

Time to dig another hole..... or twelve! Lots of great targets in such a small area. :icon_thumright:

That's the way to dig a test pit so fine that it would make an Arc. weep with envy. Good on ya Cru for showing how it should be done.

UNREAL...........

I still have 1 left on my list, so close to the Church I'm a little worried its not only going to be just animal bones I dig!

Great saves Crusader. Your restoration of the yard is a tribute to our hobby - nice!

You did a great job of filling in the hole and replacing the grass-almost no sign at all of a dig.

Perfect job covering the hole! Wish you luck to get into the roman layer next time.
Funny thing is, i did the same yesterday too. Got the stuff cleaned today and post in a couple minutes.
