I have a Whites MXT I purchased about a month ago. So far have found some decent relics but not the variety I am looking for. I have done alot of research on this machine and it seems to hold its own. Anyway my question is , can you toggle between C & J and Relic Mode without having any issues with ground balance? Seems that I can get a little better determination of whats in the ground before I dig. Saw someone else post that before you can switch thru the modes you have to ground balance machine. I usually dont mess with the prospecting mode in this elimination process. I have been running it in Alternate relic mode with the gain at about +2 and disc at bout 4. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Switching between modes really won't give you anymore ideal whats in the ground as the VDI is the same between modes and the only difference is showing coins or relics. I usually detect in relic mode as it seems to detect a little deeper but the VDI and quality of sound is the same between coin and relic mode on the target, once you use it long enough in coin mode you will know what VDI the coins come in at as in nickle, dime, quarter, ect. You will even see the VDI difference between silver dimes, quarters, ect, compaired to clad coins then once you know what they sound like and VDI like you really won't need the coin mode to tell what your digging, and there's always going to be those first finds that coin mode won't help out on anyway as the detector doesn't have anything that will tell you its a two cent piece you'll have to go by VDI once you find one you'll know what they VDI at. The gold coins are the same way the detector isn't going to tell you its a 5 dollar gold coin you'll have to ask someone who's found one what they come up on the VDI or find one so you'll know. Make sure you have some good qaulity headphones as those deep whisper targets are usually the good deep old coins and are easy to pass up even with good headphones until you get used to the whisper signals, then you'll be waiting to hear those targets. If you don't have the D2 coil yet I'd say get one as that is my favorite coil its deep and separates good for a big coil and its like an MXT on steroids with that coil as I can get silver dimes at 10"+ and have found some at 12" before. @wingmaster..Thanks for the info. I am still using the stock coil (950) and seem to get decent depth with it. I hear alot about the "whispers". I have a fairly good set of headphones, volume control, but havent noticed a 'whisper yet'. Can you describe a lil maybe.? I like this unit, just trying to get up on the basics to tweak it out. I havent been hunting long but played with a few different machines and this is a nice setup. Always enjoy tips and tricks from the Masters out there.

The whisper targets are very quite signals they are mostly repeatable but not always on every swing since the detector is barely picking at this deep, they are easy to miss with all the other tones you will be hearing with all the other metal in the ground, and if you think you hear one of these on a swing make sure to check by stopping and swinging over the spot you thought you heard the signal. The VDI could be off as well as the detector is not able to correctly ID the target at a depth that its barely picking it up, on these deep whisper targets its better to go by sound of the target then the VDI. I had some silver dimes come up around the 40's VDI when at 7" or less they read 80-83 VDI. I had the royal GT headphones at first but they aren't very good for the whisper targets, then I got the koss that whites used to sell and it made a big difference. What headphones are you using now? HH

I am using Treasure Wise headphones.. Cover ears good and has dual vol control with stereo and mono settings. Seem nice and better than what Whites sent..
