Hey Group
I'm Matt and I'm new here but I have been in the detecting hobby for about a year now. I go once or twice a month and I have been fortunate enough to dig up a gold bar "2.5 oz", old coins, musket ram rod near a skirmish site, civil war bullets, wagon wheel and more. But out of all of my finds I have never found something so cool I was just in shock for days at a time until THIS.
So basically I was doing a little gardening out at my families ranch in Missouri. I have metal detected small areas of the acreage and I always find neat items around the land. When I came to a stopping point as I waited for the wife to finish watering the new plants I grabbed my detector and started swinging behind our old barn. I dug 3 or 4 signals that were basic junk when I hit a very solid 24 on my Minelab 705. I dug to find a heavy item that said Dort on it. It looked like a coin or something but it was just too big to be a coin at 3.5 inches. I never heard of Dort but I knew this item was something good. I did a quick google search and found out exactly what it was.
The item I dug up was a radiator emblem from a Dort automobile. Dort was manufactured from 1915 to 1924. I found pictures of a few online and one picture of a 1918 looked exactly like mine! Apparently Dort was founded by the man who helped found Chevrolet. He went into business as Dort but due to money issues closed the doors in 1924. These cars where expensive and therefore are now pretty rare. In fact I found out that the Smithsonian museum has a Dort emblem on display. I found a few places that make copies of this emblem for about $150. I still haven't found an original for sale so I don't know the value but to me it's priceless! I am so thrilled that I dug this up and it's so crazy that it was just 4 inches under the ground I played on from 2 years old and on. We played crocket over this thing 100 times.
Anyone here ever seen a Dort automobile?
