went off how? Is it an all-metal detector or was it indicating non-ferrous metal? What metal detector are you using?

Looking at your sample, here are my thought;

You have a chunk of mineralized quartz with lots of iron staining. This is a very good indicator as this is the type of mineral often associated with gold load veins. You'll never know if gold (or other metal) is hiding inside until you break it up. Another good thing is that if you have a chunk of metal in it big enough to be detected its likely a nice nugget.
The bad part is that you MIGHT be just detecting the iron content.

Looks like just another quartz hot rock, I get those all the time too. If it does have gold though you should be able to easily see it if you crack it open. If not it's just mineralization.

If you have a jeweler's optic, take a good look over it to see if you notice something interesting. If you have a pinpointer, it might direct you to one part of the rock over another. If you have have muriatic acid (HCL), you might want to give it a bath in diluted HCL (perhaps 4:1 water:HCL) to see what happens, as it will remove any calcite and should clean up the iron stain but won't affect quartz, silver or gold. Or instead, Super Iron Out will just remove the iron stain. As stated above, breaking the rock and looking at the fresh break is not a bad idea either. Good luck!

It appears to be a somewhat of a compressed conglomerate comprised mainly of Agatized Quartz which could contain some amounts of Zinc, Magnesium, Iron, Lead, Silver, Gold or other metal.
